Just needed to point this out…
Posted in opinion on September 28th, 2005Eric Meyer commented today about the processes (i.e. red tape) involved in adopting children in relation to the ease with which one may become a parent by natural means.
And I agree.
Part of me wishes that there were “minimum requirements” to have a child. I mean, we need to take classes/pass a test to drive a car, heck to even legally cut hair! …But I also know there really isn’t a fair or even good way to go about this. But it does sadden me to see people who are completely unprepared for having a child. That said, I’ve also seen people who never would have qualified for any sort of “minimum requirement” …who have children and are raising them quite successfully.
I very heartily agree that the red tape involved in adopting a child is, well, just silly, really. I suppose they are trying to protect the children…but at the same time, I just don’t see the need for that much…red tape. I agree with a preliminary screening of some sort, perhaps an in-home interview (some amount of protection for the child is still necessary). Or something like pre-Cana counseling the Catholic Church requires of engaged couples. The objective being less about actually passing the test and more about getting the prospective parents to sit down and actually think about the consequences of raising a child. I’m not terribly versed on US laws, etc, but from what I’ve heard, it’s awfully hard for even single parents to adopt a child…and yet how many people (women in particular) are divorcees raising children by them selves?
It just seems so backwards…
