A surprise at the market
Posted in blog on October 27th, 2005I shop at Meijer’s almost exclusively. It has what I need at a good price.
So, moseying down the aisles, attempting to choose some Halloween candies (and looking for the Play-Doh I swore was advertised…but maybe that was Target…) I stumbled upon something I didn’t know Meijer’s (or pretty much any local store) would ever carry, even seasonally.
I found Beeman’s, Blackjack and Clove chewing gum.
For those of you not in the know, these are “retro” or “vintage” gum (flavors) from…I dunno when my parents were kids? Their parents? Beeman’s is unflavored as far as I know (I don’t chew it), Blackjack tastes like black licorice (my brother’s favorite) and Clove tastes like…cloves. lol. Fancy that. My family has always bought the little packs either from Vermont Country Store or Rau’s Country Store in Frankenmuth, MI (where I first tasted Clove gum; they—like VCS—carry lots of old-timey stuff in their eclectic store). It’s one of those cute, retro, kitschey things you wouldn’t expect in a mega-store like Meijers. But there the display sits, “reasonably” priced at $.50/pack (5 sticks). Yes, it’s a fair bit more expensive than regular gum (i.e. Orbit costs around $1.10 for 18 sticks, I think). But where else can you get the taste of clove in your chewing gum?
